GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY

Green-Wood Cemetery was founded in 1838 as a rural cemetery high on a hill in Brooklyn with a view of New York Harbor in the distance.  It is half the size of Central Park and was in fact the inspiration for Central and Prospect parks.

Its trees are very old and the sun shining through their leaves casts lovely shadows on the monuments.  When the breeze blows you feel almost as if you are in a fairy tale. The green monk parrots nesting in the spires of the entrance gate add to the feeling that you are indeed in a very special place.

The art and architecture of the monuments and the sometimes flamboyant stories associated with them are very seductive.  There is the tale of a Mafia bride who supposedly was gunned down on the steps of the church on her wedding day; and the nineteenth century monument that depicts the death of a child by showing an empty chair with a shoe and a cloak.

After seeing the results of my first photos taken there, I knew I had to return until I had told my version of the stories in Green-Wood.
